July 4th, 1939 - February 23rd, 2025
Reverend Joseph Lee McDowell, known affectionately as "Father Joe" by his parishioners, left this earth to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, February 23rd at 9:52pm in Melbourne, Florida. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing.
Fr. Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Helen; his sister, Marion (Larry); and his five daughters: Ginny (Robby), Lisa (Bill), Katie (Bryan), Susie (Sean), and Chrissy. He was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren: Joyce, Karen, Charles Joseph “CJ,” Zachary “Miles,” Hannah, Ethaniel, Willow, Kassandra, Emma, and Clara.
Fr. Joe was a graduate of the University of Virginia (B.A., 1961) and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (M.Div., 1970). He served as the Rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Oakley, Maryland (1971-1980), St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Winona, Minnesota (1980-1990), and St. James The Fisherman Episcopal Church in Islamorada, Florida (1990-1995). He later served as the Associate Rector at Gloria Dei (Glory of God) Church in Cocoa, Florida (1996-2002). Fr. Joe was also the Founder and Executive Director of Links of Hope in Cocoa, Florida (2002-2018) and Board Treasurer (2018-2025).
Fr. Joe leaves behind a legacy of love and faith. A loving husband, proud father, and devoted grandfather, he touched the lives of countless individuals and families through his church ministries.
We will forever miss you, dad and grandpa- your unwavering support, our lively card games, our shared love of singing and sports, your homemade hibiscus jams, and even our spirited debates. We know you are watching over us from heaven, and one day, we will be together again.
A memorial service will be held on March 8, 2025, at 2:00pm at Victoria Landing, 1279 Houston St, Melbourne, FL 32935.
